For many years now, "Diversity" and the "Gender pay gap" have been hot topics in many UK organisations. In the 21st century, there's no room for the belief that certain roles are better suited for one gender over another. It's time to focus on closing the gap, boosting our economy, and maximising our resources.

 

In 2014/15, women accounted for 53% (261,000) of apprenticeship starts, while men made up 47% (231,000). However, gender segregation persists across sectors. Only 2% of female apprenticeships were in construction and 4% in engineering. The UK also lags behind in female engineers compared to other EU countries, with less than 10% representation. Conversely, over 90% of hairdressing apprenticeships were taken by women in 2011-12.

Breaking Gender Stereotypes

Historically, certain industries and trades have been perceived as male-dominated spheres, perpetuating the notion that they are better suited for men. During wartime, women filled crucial roles like mechanics, engineers, and ambulance drivers, showcasing their capabilities across various sectors. As more women embrace apprenticeships, the gender skills gap narrows, leading to fairer pay scales.
